Me, My Father, and World War II

My memories of World War II revolve around my father.

Carol Ann Cullom   b. 1935

He was a corporal in the Army.  We knew he was ‘overseas’ but we didn’t always know where.  I worried that he might get hurt, or worse.  I was in the third grade at Woodrow Wilson School when one day he surprised me by walking up to me on the playground.  He was wearing his uniform.  The kids all crowded around.  I cried.

I hated to see his furlough end.  A short time after he went back, John Spence’s father was killed.  I worried with fear every day and night after that until my father finally came back home when the war ended.  It was just before Christmas.  I have been grateful for that all my life.
